5 Inspiring Articles About Minimalism

{Stories About Minimalist Living from 5 VERY Different Perspectives}

I stumbled upon looking into the whole minimalist thing by going down a youtube “up next” vortex. What I saw at first was a bunch of 20-something-hippy-hipster-holier-than-thou room tours and to be honest I wasn’t feeling that impressed. But the more I watched, the more I wondered “is this actually a thing?” and “God, I feel old and judgey.” (Please bear in mind that it wasn't until I read "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" that I became a Konvert!)

So I started looking up “minimalist lifestyle” on good old Google and found anything from ludicrous-seeming accounts of packing up 28 items and traveling the world, to people who think only having 45 pairs of shoes is super minimalist.

But amidst the absurdity that is the internet, I started to find some articles that were open-minded, thoughtful, and well balanced with ideas that seemed plausible. Although there is a common thread of thinking that "less is more", there are many different types of people utilizing minimalist principles to create extremely different types of unique lifestyles.

Here are my top 5 must-read articles for readers curious about minimalism as a lifestyle:

#1. “21 Statistics That Reveal How Much We Actually Own” | This article by Joshua Becker was one of the first things I read that actually struck a chord with me. The bulleted points map out some pretty mind boggling stats on excess consumerism and waste in America. This is an absolute must read and eye opener that applies to a lot of Americans - myself included.

#2. “Organizing Is Well Planned Hoarding” | Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus, better known as ‘The Minimalists’, cast a fresh perspective on organizing things in your home in pretty much the most blunt way possible. This article turned out to be such a true reflection of my personal tendencies. During my minimalist de-clutter I emptied out at least 20 large plastic storage bins that had been carefully tucked away in closets and under beds.

#3. “Ten Things I Learned by Downsizing My Life” | This courageous mom ditched her house in the suburbs for family life in an RV with her husband and kids. Seriously. In this article she outlines some of the unexpected lessons and rewards in this drastic change of living. Item number 10 on her list is the reason why I am sticking to my self-imposed shopping ban.

#4. “5 Simple Reasons a Minimalist Lifestyle is Good for Your Business” | A fair number of people imagine a minimalist as a lazy, well-to-do white girl millennial filling a suitcase with stuff and skipping off to Costa Rica so that they can rub it in with artsy photos of relaxing on an exotic beach while you’re checking Instagram on a 15 minute break during work (at least I thought that!). Business blogger Dominique Varendorff challenges this perspective with 5 thoughts on practicing minimalism in business.

#5. “How to Fail at Living a Minimalist Lifestyle” | There is a lot of stuff floating around the internet that can make minimal living seem super serious and intense. Minimalist writer Rosie Leizrowice, humorously explains how living a minimalist lifestyle is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor.
